Definition
An ionic bond is formed by transfer of electrons from one atom (metal) to another atom (non-metal).
Formation Example: NaCl
Sodium (Na) loses 1 electron → Na⁺
Chlorine (Cl) gains 1 electron → Cl⁻
Opposite charges attract → ionic bond
Characteristics
Formed between metal + non-metal
Strong electrostatic force
Exists as ions
Properties of Ionic Compounds
High melting & boiling points
Hard and brittle
Soluble in water
Conduct electricity in molten or aqueous state
Examples: NaCl, KBr, CaO
